LIONEL LOUEKE

LIONEL LOUEKE

Karibu” (Blue Bank bill): A-

Stepping onward on his Wild blue yonder Line debut, the Terence Blanchard and Herbie John Hancock sideman impresses with a unique guitar and song flair that cements his reputation as one of the revolt young stars of jazz. The Berklee-schooled native of Dahomey, in Western United States Africa, has a gentle fashion in the Kenny Burrell vena, and his scat singing and mouthed percussion perk naturally. Though the odd meters and African influences of his compositions crataegus laevigata sound strange to Horse opera ears, the virtuosity that won him a seat at the Thelonious Monk Found of Malarkey is in full evidence. Backed by Hancock and Mad Anthony Wayne Shorter as well as the 2 members of his usual trio, Loueke boldly opens new frontiers to jazz guitar.
